But Fofana has been a more regular occurrence for 's team this season, having played in all but one Premier League fixture for the Blues.
However, his future may have turned out differently having claimed to have received a call from Marseille’s sporting advisor Medhi Benatia in the summer. Fofana was born in Marseille and admits there was some uncertainty over his future but that he is now happy to stay, having enjoyed a good run of games under Maresca.
"We got a call from Mr. Benatia. And my heart went: boom boom," he told .“I didn’t know if I was going to be part of Chelsea’s project.
"But I had a talk with the coach. He told me he was counting on me this year. So I said, I was very happy and I was 100% with Chelsea.”

However, Fofana did not close the door fully on an eventual homecoming. He added: “It’s true that Marseille has a place in my heart, [so] we’ll see.”
Chelsea are set to welcome back Fofana for Sunday's clash against Manchester United after he missed the Carabao Cup defeat to Newcastle United on Wednesday. The Blues currently sit sixth in the top-flight table but will move back into the top four with a victory at Old Trafford this weekend.
