Despite the anticipation, confusion quickly set in amongst viewers mere moments into the show, sparking debate over whether they were witnessing a previously seen episode or fresh content, as of the popular programme concluded in October, 2024.

Perplexed viewers took to social media such as , now X, as one of them questioned: "Is this a new episode? " while another commented: "I thought this had finished last week." A third was unsure: "Are they mixing up new and old episodes? I think freeview tells me this is series 20 episodes 17?"

Quandaries deepened with comments such as "How is this a new episode? They have Covid screens between the contestants," and musings about an episode potentially overlooked: "They must have forgotten this episode cos last week it ended another series", reports .

Clarity eventually prevailed as an account on X clarified: "If you're confused about the episode of #WhoWantsToBeAMillionaire which are airing on ITV right now... they're old episodes (not connected to the series which finished a fortnight ago) which have been left on the shelf (as you can tell by the Covid screens)."
