Why Chelsea was not given penalty against Liverpool for Trent Alexander-Arnold challenge

The Premier League has clarified why was not given a penalty during the first half of their match against .

Trent Alexander-Arnold was seen bringing down Jadon Sancho in the Reds' box, stepping on the Blues winger's foot as he swiveled to keep the ball in play.

Despite causing Sancho to fall, the Liverpool defender was deemed not to have fouled the Blues winger by the on-field referee, John Brooks. Although the incident didn't cause much stir on Sky Sports, the Video Assistant Referee did conduct a review.

  • Just before the 30-minute mark, the Reds were awarded a penalty after Levi Colwill was judged to have fouled Curtis Jones in the Chelsea area. The VAR team reviewed and confirmed Brooks' decision, ruling that the contact from the Blues defender warranted a penalty.

    Then, just before half-time, the on-field referee gave the Reds another penalty following a collision between Robert Sanchez and Curtis Jones. The Chelsea goalkeeper clashed with the Liverpool midfielder, but it was decided that the former had played the ball.

    An official statement from , stating: "The referee awarded a penalty to Liverpool for a foul by Sanchez on Jones."

    "The VAR deemed that Sanchez won the ball and no foul was committed and recommended an on-field review. The referee overturned the original decision and play restarted with a drop ball."

    VAR stirred up more debate in the second half's opening moments when Chelsea's leveller was initially chalked off. Nicolas Jackson outpaced the Liverpool defence and slotted past Caoimhin Kelleher at his near post.

    After Oliver and Hopton's consultation at Stockley Park, it turned out Jackson was onside after all, leading to the goal being rightfully restored. The Premier League Match Centre confirmed: "Jackson's goal was disallowed for offside on-field. The VAR checked and confirmed that Jackson was in an onside position and recommended that the goal was awarded."
