Born on 24 November 1960 in Amravati, Maharashtra, Justice Gavai completed his BA and LLB from Nagpur University. Coming from a simple family, Gavai made his own identity in the legal world by making education his ladder.

Law and Justice Minister Arjun Ram Meghwal shared information on the social media platform X and said that Justice BR. Gavai has been appointed under the powers conferred under the Constitution of India. He is currently serving as a judge in the Supreme Court and will take over as the Chief Justice of India (CJI) from May 14, 2025.

Started practicing law in 1985

According to media reports, Justice BR Gavai started practicing law in 1985 and within a few years made a mark in the Nagpur Bench and Bombay High Court with his ability. He was a permanent lawyer for several municipal corporations including Amravati University and later also served as a government lawyer and public prosecutor.


Made a Supreme Court judge in 2019

On 14 November 2003, he was appointed as an additional judge in the Bombay High Court and became a permanent judge in 2005. After this, he presided over various cases in Mumbai, Nagpur, Aurangabad and Panaji benches. On 24 May 2019, he was made a judge of the Supreme Court.
