In a significant step forward in the field of education, the National Council of Educational Research and Training (NCERT) has included chapters on Ayurveda in science textbooks for grades 6 to 8. This change is aimed at integrating Indian knowledge traditions with modern education under the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020. This initiative will provide students with an opportunity to understand science, as well as health, nutrition, and environmental balance from an Indian perspective.
A New Glimpse of Ayurveda in Science
According to NCERT Director Dinesh Prasad Saklani, this change aims to connect students with scientific knowledge as well as principles of physical and mental well-being. The 20 qualities of Ayurveda have been added to the Class 6 science textbook.
In Class 8, a new chapter titled "Ayurveda: Balance of Body, Mind, and Environment" has been added, focusing on topics such as daily routine and seasonal lifestyle.
Expansion in Higher Education
Instead of limiting Ayurveda to the school level, the UGC and the Ministry of AYUSH are jointly developing special modules to incorporate it into college and university education. According to AYUSH Minister Prataprao Jadhav, both allopathy and AYUSH systems complement each other and can together create an integrated healthcare model. This initiative will provide students with an opportunity to understand the depth of the traditional Indian medical system.
Education Connected to the Indian Knowledge Tradition
The main objective of NEP 2020 is to connect education with the Indian knowledge tradition. Incorporating Ayurveda into the science syllabus will not only increase students' respect for ancient Indian science but will also help them become health-conscious and responsible citizens. This change will serve as a bridge between modern advanced education and traditional knowledge.
