Fair trade regulator Competition Commission of India (CCI) has ordered a detailed investigation into Google's conduct in the online display advertising market on a complaint filed by the Alliance of Digital India Foundation (ADIF). In an order passed on Friday, the CCI said it has decided to club this complaint with the ongoing investigations in similar cases and directed the Director General (DG) to conduct an integrated investigation into Google's conduct in the education technology ecosystem.
It further said, the Director General is directed to investigate various alleged practices of Google in online display advertising services and/or education technology intermediary services and, thus, submit a consolidated investigation report in the cases.
Why will Google be investigated in India?
The order comes in response to a detailed complaint filed by ADIF alleging that Google is engaged in anti-competitive practices at various levels of its advertising technology stack.
In its complaint, ADIF alleged that Google has engaged in anti-competitive conduct by prioritizing its services in the education technology ecosystem through several of its group entities, including integrating and bundling its Publisher Ad Server (DFP) with its Ad Exchange (ADX), and access to YouTube ad inventory through the use of its demand-side platform (DV360).
What if Google is found guilty?
If the allegations of manipulation in the online display advertising market against Google are proved to be true, then a hefty fine can be imposed on Google. Along with this, pressure can also be put on Google to change its policy.
