The 25-year-old Prithvi Shaw’s 220-ball 181 vs Mumbai for Maharashtra in a practice game should have been the celebration of a great innings. But it was what happened after he got out that became the highlight of the day. Shaw almost got into a fist fight with Musheer Khan, who got him out. Musheer is the younger brother of Sarfaraz Khan.
Shaw’s knock contained 21 fours and three sixes. He put on 305 with Ashrin Kulkarni (186 from 140) for the first wicket. But the real drama happened when he got out in the 74th over. Musheer took the wicket and the catch was taken by Irfan Umair. Musheer’s two words set Shaw off. So what was it that he said that made Shaw completely lose it?

Interestingly, the words themselves do not really mean anything malicious. Musheer said ‘Thank you’ which is innocent enough. However, it appears that Musheer’s send-off had a sarcastic tone that was enough to trigger Shaw’s violent side. A video shows Shaw angrily going over to Musheer, appearing to raise his bat and grabbing the latter’s collar. The on-field umpire and other players had to separate them or else they would have come to blows.

“It’s a practice match. They’re all former teammates. Such things happen in the heat of the moment. It’s all okay now, and there’s no issue.” Maharashtra captain Ankit Bawne as he refused to make too much of what had happened.
Cricbuzz has learned from both sides that the sledging to Shaw was rampant during his destructive innings but it was the ‘Thank you’ from Musheer that finally triggered him. Neither the Mumbai Cricket Association nor the Maharashtra Cricket Association has issued a formal statement. No disciplinary action has been taken so far. This situation was resolved quickly but it shows how even simple words like ‘thank you’ are enough to light a fuse in this competitive game.
