Giorgio Armani, the man who redefined elegance with his clean, unstructured silhouettes and became a symbol of Milan’s global fashion dominance, has passed away at 91. The fashion house confirmed his death on Thursday, saying he died peacefully at home, surrounded by loved ones. Armani had missed his June runway shows while recovering from an undisclosed illness but was preparing for a grand 50-year celebration of his brand during this month’s Milan Fashion Week.
According to American Press, Armani had been quietly battling health issues in recent months. His passing brings to an end one of fashion’s most extraordinary careers, one that transformed not just clothing but entire lifestyles.
Forbes reported that Armani has a net worth of $12.1 billion. As per the Seattle Times, beyond clothing, the Giorgio Armani brand extended into accessories, perfumes, cosmetics, home furnishings, books, chocolates, and flowers. His ventures also included more than 20 restaurants across the world, two luxury hotels—in Dubai and Milan —and even his own basketball team, EA7 Emporio Armani Milan, better known as Olympia Milano.
On Instagram, the Armani Group expressed its grief, writing: “With infinite sorrow, the Armani Group announces the passing of its creator, founder, and tireless driving force: Giorgio Armani.” Employees and collaborators always referred to him respectfully as Il Signor Armani, the post said, remembering him as “indefatigable to the end,” someone who worked tirelessly on collections and projects until his final days.
The tribute went on to highlight how Armani’s vision expanded far beyond fashion, anticipating cultural shifts with clarity and grounding his designs in people’s lives. He was remembered as a man of independence—both in thought and action—who stayed deeply connected to Milan and gave back to the community through philanthropy and civic support.
The Armani Group said the funeral chamber will be open to the public from Saturday, September 6, to Sunday, September 7, between 9 a.m. and 6 p.m., at Via Bergognone 59 inside the Armani/Teatro in Milan. In keeping with Mr. Armani’s personal wishes, the funeral itself will be private.
