Security agencies in Mumbai and along Maharashtra’s coastal regions were placed on high alert Thursday, two days after the deadly terror strike in Pahalgam, Jammu and Kashmir, that left 26 people dead, most of them Indian tourists.
Officials said the move is a precautionary step aimed at tightening coastal surveillance and preventing any spillover risks in the aftermath of the attack.
According to a senior police official, the Maharashtra Home Department has directed Mumbai Police and related coastal agencies to step up vigil at sea. Security checks at ports, jetties, and waterfronts have been intensified, with additional deployment of patrol units and surveillance systems.
The Pahalgam attack, which took place on April 22 at the scenic Baisaran meadow, has drawn nationwide condemnation.
Meanwhile, in New Delhi, over 500 people gathered near the Pakistan High Commission to protest the attack. Holding placards and chanting slogans against Pakistan, demonstrators — including BJP workers and members of social groups like the Anti-Terror Action Forum — demanded strong retaliatory action.
“Earlier, the government carried out a surgical strike. We demand similar action again to eradicate terrorism,” one protester told news agency PTI.
Delhi Police deployed heavy security, set up barricades 500 metres from the high commission, and implemented traffic diversions. Some protesters tried to scale the barricades but were stopped and escorted away by police.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi vowed a decisive response, declaring that the country would "pursue the terrorists to the end of the earth."
His first public reaction on the gruesome attack came from Bihar's Madhubani, where he launched several development projects.
Modi added that the brutality of the attack had left the nation in mourning.
“We will identify, track and punish every terrorist, their handlers and backers. The willpower of 140 crore Indians will now break the back of the masters of terror,” he said.
The elevated alert level in Mumbai comes amid wider national security measures being put in place in response to the incident.
