Russian President Vladimir Putin on Saturday announced an Easter truce in the Ukraine conflict, declaring a temporary halt in hostilities from Saturday evening until midnight on Sunday.

"Today from 1800 (1500 GMT) to midnight Sunday (2100 GMT Sunday), the Russian side announces an Easter truce," Putin said in televised remarks during a meeting with Chief of the General Staff Valery Gerasimov.

While declaring the ceasefire, Putin also instructed Gerasimov to remain prepared to respond to any "aggressive actions" by Ukraine during the truce period, according to the Interfax news agency.

Putin accused Ukraine of repeatedly violating a previous moratorium on strikes against energy infrastructure. "Ukraine has violated the moratorium on strikes on energy infrastructure more than 100 times," he said, as quoted by RIA.

Despite the ongoing hostilities, Putin reiterated Russia’s openness to diplomacy. "Russia has always been ready for negotiations and welcomes the desire of the United States, China and other countries for a fair settlement on Ukraine," he said.

The statements come amid renewed international calls for de-escalation and efforts toward a negotiated end to the war, now in its third year.
