Soumya rape case accused escapes from jail: A man serving a life sentence for rape and murder escaped from Kannur Central Jail in Kerala during the early hours of Friday, according to police sources.

The convict, Govindachamy—also known by the alias Charley Thomas—was found missing from his prison cell, prompting officials to launch a statewide manhunt. Authorities have also ordered an internal investigation to uncover how the escape occurred.

Govindachamy, a handicapped individual from Virudhachalam in Tamil Nadu, has a notorious criminal history in Kerala. He was convicted in connection with a gruesome crime that took place on February 1, 2011.

The victim, a 23-year-old saleswoman, was travelling from Kochi to Shoranur by train. She had shifted to a general compartment at Vallathol Nagar station, where Govindachamy boarded the same coach as the train departed. He later attacked, raped, and murdered her. Following a police investigation, he was apprehended and sentenced to life imprisonment.

The prison break has raised serious questions about jail security, and efforts are underway to recapture the escaped convict as soon as possible.
