Srinagar: The encounter in Kulgam in southern Kashmir entered its third day on Sunday with firing continuing at the encounter spot. Two terrorists were killed and one was injured while three army men were injured.
Officials informed that the encounter started on Friday evening in Akhal area of Kulgam following the specific inputs regarding the presence of militants in the area.
"We have recovered one body from the encounter spot. It is that of Haris from Pulwama who was associated with LeT. One more body has been spotted at the site but firing resumed and it has not been retrieved yet," Inspector General of Police on Kashmir VK Birdi told ET.
He said, "One more terrorist was injured but firing has resumed at the operation site." The officials informed that the encounter spot is a mountainous terrain with thick forest cover, which made the operation difficult. "Three army men were injured in the ongoing operation," said another senior official. Firing and blast sounds could be heard from the encounter site intermittently on Sunday as well. The police and army are yet to issue a formal statement on the operation. The identity and group affiliation of the slain terrorisrs are being ascertained. "Firing still continues at the spot," SSP Kulgam Sahil Sarangal informed. The officials claimed that they expected the presence of "one to two more terrorists at the spot." The armed forces have deployed high-tech surveillance systems and elite para commando teams at the encounter spot.
Over the past ten days, seven militants were killed in three separate encounters across J&K. Three infiltrators allegedly linked with the Pahalgam attack were killed on July 28 in the upper reaches of Dachigam National Park on the outskirts of Srinagar. Two infiltrators were killed in Poonch district of Jammu on July 30.
