The legendary actor and filmmaker, revered for his iconic patriotic films and lovingly referred to as 'Bharat Kumar', passed away at the age of 87 on Friday at Mumbai’s Kokilaben Dhirubhai Ambani Hospital.
As per medical reports, the veteran star succumbed to cardiogenic shock resulting from acute myocardial infarction—a severe heart attack. He had also been suffering from decompensated liver cirrhosis in recent months, which further compromised his health, according to news agency ANI.
He was admitted to the hospital on February 21, 2025, after a noticeable decline in his condition. Despite continued medical intervention, his health deteriorated, ultimately leading to his demise at the hospital’s Andheri facility.
Born as Harikrishna Giri Goswami on July 24, 1937, Manoj Kumar became a notable figure in Hindi cinema, particularly for his films that celebrated nationalism.
He gained recognition with films such as Shaheed (1965), Upkar (1967), Purab Aur Paschim (1970) and Roti Kapda Aur Makaan (1974), many of which he also directed. His performance in Upkar solidified his patriotic image, leading to his famous nickname.
Beyond his patriotic films, he starred in several other acclaimed movies, including Hariyali Aur Raasta, Woh Kaun Thi, Himalaya Ki God Mein, Do Badan, Patthar Ke Sanam, Neel Kamal and Kranti.
For his contributions to Indian cinema, he was honoured with the Padma Shri in 1992 and the prestigious Dadasaheb Phalke Award in 2015.
