Army called in after hand grenade found in unsuspecting Coventry homeowner's garden

A major Coventry road was sealed off after an unexploded bomb was discovered in Radford earlier today (September 13).

The police were called to reports of a hand grenade found in a garden on Beake Avenue.

Traffic was rerouted as a significant cordon was set up near Chesholme Road.

The Explosive Ordnance Disposal Unit (EOD) was summoned at around 11.15am.

After conducting checks, the device was confirmed to be empty, according to Coventry Police, reports Coventry Live.

Beake Avenue has since been reopened and traffic is flowing smoothly this evening, as per West Midlands Roads.

A representative for Coventry Police stated: "We were called to reports of a suspected hand grenade in a garden on Beake Avenue, Coventry, earlier today (September 13).

"An Army EOD team attended and confirmed that the device was empty and of no risk to safety. A cordon put in place has now been lifted."

In a post shared on X, WM Roads announced: "Earlier disruption has now been cleared. Traffic is flowing normally in the area."
