Liverpool take firm transfer stance on Nunez after Premier League title confirmed

Darwin Nunez is being eyed by Atletico Madrid this summer, according to reports in Spain, with chief Michael Edwards already eyeing up a new centre-forward.

’s side were finally confirmed as champions after defeating Hotspur at Anfield on Sunday afternoon but attention has already turned to how they can defend their title next season.

And a new striker is set to be top of their list of transfer priorities in the summer window following a difficult campaign for Nunez.

The Uruguayan, 25, has scored five times in just eight league starts with the only notable highlight coming off the bench to score twice late on to win at Brentford. Liverpool would like a fee of about £40million for a player who cost £64million in the summer of 2022 but may need to settle for less.

However say that Atletico head coach Diego Simeone admires Nunez and the club may be keen on a deal if the price is right.

And the outlet goes on to say that Liverpool have already been weighing up potential new arrivals to spearhead next season’s title defence – after apparently informing Nunez that he will not be part of Slot’s plans after the break.

Atletico, meanwhile, remain keen on a deal for Tottenham Hotspur vice captain Cristian Romero, who last week admitted that he was eager to play in .

Nunez has also had interest from clubs with Al Nassr expressing their desire to sign him in January before deciding on a deal to bring in Jhon Duran from instead.

Before the Spurs win Slot was asked about reports in Portugal that should Nunez make another appearance for the club an additional payment of £4.2m would need to be made to former club Benfica.

But Slot insisted he has never been told not to play someone at Liverpool down to financial reasons - and he then introduced Nunez towards the end of their confirmation victory for a first appearance since the beginning of April.
