In a heartbreaking story from Bollywood, a celebrated actress once prayed for her own daughter’s death, unable to bear the pain her child was enduring. Even more shocking — she didn’t even visit her daughter one final time after her passing.
Born on 26 April 1948 in Kolkata, this veteran actress is none other than Moushumi Chatterjee, famous for her work in films like Hamshakal, Ghar Parivar, Bhola Bhala, Prem Bandhan, and Aa Ab Laut Chalein.
Moushumi's journey in the film industry began early. She was married to Jayanta Mukherjee when she was just 15 and studying in 10th grade. Despite marrying young, she managed both her family life and her rising career in Bollywood with remarkable grace. Over the years, she acted alongside legends like Rajesh Khanna, Shashi Kapoor, Jeetendra, Sanjeev Kumar, Vinod Mehra, and Amitabh Bachchan.
Became a Mother at 17At the tender age of 17, Moushumi Chatterjee gave birth to her first daughter, Payal. Later, in 1982, she welcomed her second daughter, Megha. Throughout her career, Moushumi managed to stay away from major controversies — until a heartbreaking episode involving her son-in-law brought her into the media spotlight.
Son-in-law’s Shocking AllegationsIt was Moushumi’s son-in-law who publicly accused her of not visiting her daughter Payal one last time before her cremation. After a long wait and no appearance from the actress, the family proceeded with the funeral rites.
Payal’s death in 2020 led to a major family rift. It is said that Moushumi and her daughter's in-laws had intense disputes during Payal’s final days.
Praying for Her Daughter's PeacePayal had been suffering from diabetes from a very young age. In a touching interview, Moushumi confessed that she prayed for her daughter's peaceful death, as she couldn't bear to watch her suffer.
“She was such a lovely child, but the pain she was going through was unbearable. In 2017, she fell into a coma. Although she occasionally regained consciousness, we were allowed to see her only under strict conditions,” Moushumi shared. “That’s why I prayed to God, because I couldn’t watch her in so much agony anymore.”
A Bond Broken Beyond RepairTheir family ties had already been strained after Moushumi accused her son-in-law of neglecting Payal’s medical care. The matter escalated to a legal battle, where her son-in-law Dicky Sinha sued her for defamation and won. The bitterness deepened to the extent that when Payal passed away in 2019 after spending around 30 months in a coma, Moushumi Chatterjee chose not to visit her daughter’s body even once.
This painful chapter remains a tragic reminder of how even deep family bonds can be fractured beyond healing.
