The Delhi blast near the Red Fort has sent shockwaves across the nation. The powerful explosion claimed 10 lives and injured 20 others, leaving behind scenes of horror that eyewitnesses say they will never forget. But amidst this tragedy, one name has drawn the country’s attention — Dr. Shaheen Shahid.
Shaheen was arrested in Faridabad shortly before the blast. Investigations have revealed that she is linked to the same terror network believed to be responsible for the attack.
Connection to the Jaish-e-Mohammed NetworkAuthorities have confirmed that Dr. Shaheen was an active member of Jamaat-ul-Mominat, the women’s wing of the banned terrorist organization Jaish-e-Mohammed (JeM). Her personal life, much like her political associations, has been surrounded by controversy — with even her former husband coming forward to expose her secrets.
An earlier audio recording of Masood Azhar, the Pakistan-based terrorist, revealed his plans to establish a female unit under JeM called Jamaat-ul-Mominat. Reports suggest that Dr. Shaheen was chosen to lead this wing in India, staying in frequent contact with Masood’s sister, Sadia Azhar, before the Delhi blast.
The women’s unit in Pakistan is reportedly led by Sadia Azhar, whose husband Yusuf Azhar — a key planner of the 1999 Kandahar hijacking — was killed earlier this year during Operation Sindoor in Bahawalpur, Pakistan.
Marriage, Divorce, and a New Beginning in FaridabadOriginally from Lucknow, Dr. Shaheen was married to Dr. Zafar Hayat, a Mumbai-based physician. The couple had children, though details about them remain undisclosed. Police reports indicate that the marriage ended in divorce in 2015, allegedly due to Dr. Shaheen’s relationship with Dr. Muzammil, a fellow academic.
After the separation, she joined Al Falah University in Faridabad, Haryana — the same institution where Dr. Muzammil worked. Investigators believe it was during this period that Shaheen became influenced by extremist ideologies.
Career and DisappearanceBefore her association with Al Falah University, Dr. Shaheen had a reputable academic career. She served as a professor in the Pharmacology Department at GSVM Medical College, Kanpur, for nearly seven years.
She was selected through the UPPSC and joined the department in 2006. In 2009, she was transferred to Kannauj Medical College, but by March 2010, she had returned to Kanpur after an alleged dispute with another faculty member.
From 2010 to 2013, Shaheen continued working at GSVM Medical College — until she suddenly disappeared without notifying the administration. Repeated attempts by the college to reach her, including letters sent to her Lucknow address, went unanswered.
In 2020, she resurfaced through written communication, expressing a desire to rejoin the college — but once again, she avoided appearing in person.
Dismissal from Government ServiceBy 2021, the government officially terminated her employment after she failed to respond to multiple inquiries regarding her seven-year unexplained absence. Sources describe her as quiet and reserved, though she often took extended leaves, citing health or family issues.
