As July begins, political unrest has resurfaced in Nepal, placing Prime Minister KP Sharma Oli under intense pressure from multiple sides. There are growing concerns that Oli might lose his position once again, reminiscent of the dramatic political upheaval in July 2021. This July 2024, a political maneuver by Pushpa Kamal Dahal Prachanda is stirring similar uncertainty.
Why is KP Sharma Oli’s Position in Danger?
Nepal’s Parliament has 275 seats, with Oli’s party holding 79 and Sher Bahadur Deuba’s party 88. Although they currently share power in a coalition government supported also by the Praja Socialist Party and the Civil Party, the Civil Party recently withdrew its support, weakening the coalition.
If the Civil Party formally declares the government in minority in Parliament, Oli could face a vote of confidence.
A faction within the Nepali Congress is openly critical of the coalition. Senior leader Shekhar Koirala recently stated that the alliance has lost relevance and that none of the promises made at its formation have been fulfilled. Reports suggest that over half of the Congress members want to pull out of the alliance.
Just two days ago, Congress President Sher Bahadur Deuba and former Prime Minister Pushpa Kamal Dahal Prachanda held a closed-door meeting in Kathmandu to discuss the political situation. Prachanda has openly invited Nepali Congress to form a government, making this meeting highly significant for Nepal’s future leadership.
Three Leaders Dominating Nepal’s PM Chair for a Decade
Since democracy’s restoration in 2008, Nepal has seen 13 governments. Over the past decade, only three leaders — KP Sharma Oli (appointed PM in 2015), Pushpa Kamal Dahal Prachanda (2016), and Sher Bahadur Deuba (2017) — have rotated in holding the Prime Minister’s post. The current political turbulence indicates another potential shift in this ongoing power struggle.
