Suzuki's Indian unit is set to supply its first electric vehicle (EV) to Toyota Motor as part of their global partnership, the companies announced on Wednesday. This collaboration involves the development of a battery electric vehicle (BEV) SUV model that will be manufactured at Suzuki Motor Gujarat in India, starting in the spring of 2025.
Both Suzuki and Toyota have historical ties, originating from the western region of Shizuoka Prefecture, Japan. The two companies transitioned from loom manufacturing to automobiles and have been exploring business partnerships since 2016. Their collaboration aims to enhance mobility and driving enjoyment, spanning various areas such as vehicle production, mutual supply, and the promotion of electrified vehicles. This initiative has led to the introduction of collaborative vehicles in markets including Japan, India, Europe, Africa, and the Middle East.
This new development represents the first BEV to emerge from the original equipment manufacturer (OEM) relationship between Suzuki and Toyota. The vehicle will be launched globally, offering consumers a BEV option in the rapidly growing SUV market. Both companies are committed to advancing their efforts toward achieving a carbon-neutral society.
Designed specifically as a BEV, the new model features a compact SUV design that delivers excellent driving dynamics and a substantial cruising range. It will also offer a four-wheel-drive (4WD) option for enhanced performance on challenging terrains.
The BEV unit and platform for this model have been developed collaboratively by Suzuki, Toyota, and Daihatsu Motor Corporation, leveraging the strengths of each company. Maruti Suzuki, a subsidiary of Suzuki Motor, will commence production of the EV at its plant in Gujarat in spring 2025.
