The recent rape and murder of a female doctor at Kolkata's RG Medical College and Hospital has sparked anger across the country. The Kolkata Police and the CBI are investigating the case. This incident has once again shaken the country. But this is not the first time that such brutality has been committed against a woman. A similar horrific incident took place 51 years ago at Mumbai's King Edward Memorial (KEM) Hospital. At that time, a nurse named Aruna Shanbaug was the victim of this brutality.

The painful story of Aruna Shanbaug

Aruna Shanbaug came to Mumbai from Karnataka in 1966 and was working as a nurse at KEM Hospital. She was just a month away from getting married, but the day of 27 November 1973 was going to change her life completely. Sohanal Valmiki, a ward boy at the hospital, brutally raped Aruna and strangled her with a dog chain for fear of getting caught. Sohanal thought Aruna was dead, so he left her there and fled. Though Aruna was not dead, she went into a coma after the incident.

She was in a coma for 42 years

Aruna Shanbaug never regained consciousness after this accident. She suffered a severe brain injury, due to which she remained in a coma for 42 years. She lay on the bed of KEM Hospital like a living corpse, where her colleagues took care of her. The hospital staff was also very sad to see her condition.

Demand for euthanasia and the Supreme Court's decision

Seeing this painful condition of Aruna, journalist Pinky Virani filed a petition in the Supreme Court in 2011, in which she sought permission for euthanasia for Aruna. However, the Supreme Court rejected this petition. The court said that Aruna was not completely brain dead and she used to react in some situations. Therefore, she was not allowed euthanasia. The hospital staff had noticed that Aruna used to get scared if any man came to her room, so no man was allowed to come to her room.

Kolkata case and the memory of Aruna

The recent incident with the doctor in Kolkata's RG Medical College reminded us of the Aruna Shanbaug incident of 1973. The victim in the Kolkata case died, but this incident kept Aruna Shanbaug a living corpse for 42 years. The Supreme Court also expressed strong displeasure over the Kolkata case and expressed concern about the safety of women doctors.
