BBC News halts for breaking news announcement as Fiona Bruce issues statement

Send Push

Beloved broadcaster was forced to halt her usual schedule on BBC News at 10 as she issued some new breaking news about India's latest attacks on Pakistan. She told viewers: "News is just coming in. India has said it has launched an attack on nine sites in Pakistan and Pakistan-administered Kashmir.

"Pakistan has now said it is retaliating. These are - I will just remind you - two nuclear-powered states." A spokesperson for Pakistan's military says Islamabad "will respond to this [attack] at a time and place of its choosing." They added: "All of our air force jets are airborne. This is a shameful and cowardly attack that was carried out from within India's airspace."

The missiles early struck locations in Pakistan-administered Kashmir and in the country's eastern Punjab province, according to three Pakistani security officials.

It is understood one of them struck a mosque in the city of Bahawalpur in Punjab, where a child was killed, and a woman and man were injured, according to one official. India's Defence Ministry said in a statement that at least nine sites were targeted "where terrorist attacks against India have been planned."

President Trump siad it was a "shame" when he was asked about the breaking news during a White House press conference. He added: "We just heard about it as we were walking through the doors of the Oval... I guess people knew something was going to happen, based on a little bit of the past, they've been fighting for a long time... I just hope it ends very quickly."

Relations between India and Pakistan have declined sharply following a deadly militant attack on tourists in Kashmir last month. The fatal militant atack killed at least 26 people, mostly touristsm in the picturesque town of Pahalgam in Indian-administed Kashmir on 22 April. Militants opened fire on people who were visiting Baisaran, a mountain-top meadow three miles from Pahalgam.
