More NatWest branches are scheduled to permantely close next week as the major high street bank continues with its plans to close over 160 branches by the end of the year.
The closures come as result of the huge blow that has hit the high street in recent years. A fall in consumer spending and footfall has had a significant impact on high streets across the nation, with many of them seeing mass store closures or completely collapsing. As well as large retailers, the effects have rolled over onto banks too, with more customers prefering to bank via mobile apps or online rather than going into a physical branch.
NatWest is just one of the many major high street banks that have been closing branches throughout the year, and so far the bank has shut down 72 of its branches across the nation.
September has already seen 18 locations lose a branch, including a Wickford, which saw the shutting down of its branch just yesterday (Thursday, September 18). There are eight more branches scheduled for closure this month, with five of them happening in just days.
NatWest said: "Banking has changed dramatically in recent years, with an increased demand for mobile and online services, as our customers benefit from a faster and easier way to bank. Closing a branch is a decision we take very seriously.
"We know it can affect those less confident with alternatives we offer. We'll always work hard to guide and support you through the changes and find the best way to serve you from now on."
Community Pop-ups are one option customers have to support them with local and digital services during the closures. The pop-up sites are available in selected locations for up to 12 weeks after changes.
NatWest also have mobile branches that visit specific locations and Banking Hubs that help with services, such as making deposits and withdrawals, making balance enquiries, and paying utility bills.
Customers can find out the different ways to bank as well as information about specific closures on the NatWest website.
