GB News came to an abrupt halt as the programme issued a breaking update on Hadush Kebatu. The illegal migrant, who was previously jailed for 12 months for sexually assaulting a teenage girl in Epping, was mistakenly released from Chelmsford Prison instead of being handed over to officials for deportation. He was arrested once again by Met Police officers and has now been deported back to Addis Ababa. In a surprising revelation, GB News reported that Kebatu was paid £500 to ensure he did not disrupt the flight back to the Ethiopian capital.
Presenters Andrew Pierce and Miriam Cates were joined in the studio by GB News' Home and Security Editor Mark White, who provided further details on the "breaking news." He said: "I think people will find this absolutely extraordinary. Hadush Kebatu was given a five hundred pound payment to facilitate his flight in a peaceful manner basically, so that he didn't disrupt the aircraft.
"Sources have told me that Kebatu was forcibly deported. A team of five immigration enforcement staff and contractors escorted and accompanied him on that flight. It left last night to head to the Ethiopian capital.
"He was not on the facilitated returns scheme, however, given Kebatu's threats to disrupt the removal, an operational decision was taken to provide a discretionary five hundred pound payment to this convicted sex offender who was on the run for over two days."
"Disgusting. That's disgusting," fumed Pierce.
Cates questioned whether it is "standard practice" to provide money to individuals facing deportation who threaten to misbehave on flights. "Would he have known that this was coming his way?" she asked.
White responded: "I'm not sure if he would've known. It happens a lot of the time. Sometimes those who are being forcibly removed from the country go voluntarily and don't cause disruption.
"But other times they can be given a payment of up to two thousand pounds or so. Part of that is to help them resettle when they get back - an incentive to go."
The GB News star said he understands that this is sometimes done to avoid a lengthy legal battle, which could result in even higher costs. However, in this case, White suggested that there were alternative ways to ensure Kebatu returned home without causing disruption.
He added: "But this to me. I get what they're saying but just gag him! Just get him out of the country."
Cates raged: "There's people at home who are working hard, paying taxes and knowing that money is in his back pocket. He's come here illegally. He's assaulted a young girl and he's five hundred pounds better off."
