Spring brings fresh growth to the but the rainy April showers also create the perfect conditions for to take over your . Moss can quickly spread across damp grass and, if not dealt with as soon as possible, it can turn a weak lawn into a patchy, uneven mess.
Alan Down, a with over 50 years of experience and founder of , has shared that you can eliminate moss without much effort if you use his favourite organic . He said: "To control moss on lawns, I recommend that you try MO Bacter moss control. This is a bacterial and, therefore, a non-chemical control method.
"I've had good results with MO Bacter for many years. What I especially like is that there is no need to rake out the dead moss when it is dead. It seems that the product simply eats the moss, and it disappears!"
MO Bacter contains potash, an alkaline potassium compound, which moss will overfeed on and die naturally, as this spongy mantle only thrives in an acidic environment.
It is an organic fertiliser that causes the moss to brown but will also feed a lawn to get it strong and healthy for the summer months.
A lot of organic moss killers , but this fertiliser is free from this compound and also does not contain chemicals or pesticides.
MO Bacter is simple to use and can be used any time of the year as long as the temperature is above 12C as this is when grass is actively growing.
You do not even need a rake to use this moss control, making it very easy to apply, but it should be noted that moss can only grow on an unhealthy lawn.
Moss will take over a weak grass that is overwatered or lacking in nutrients, and you need to address the underlying issues on a lawn, otherwise, the moss will simply grow back.
If your lawn is not draining properly and stays wet for too long then it likely needs aeration, a simple process of poking holes in the soil to stop soil compaction.
Alan added: "Wetness also helps moss to thrive so you need to get some air into the soil now by spiking it. Perhaps for the most severe cases, you should remove cores of soil and fill those holes with horticultural sand or fine grit. This provides many tiny pockets of well-drained substrate. Heavy rain will drain away, and the roots can get the air that they need to thrive."
A lawn with soggy grass will likely be wilting and yellow, while a lawn that is underfertilised with be thin and slow-growing.
Spring lawns tend to need a lot of nitrogen to get them strong and green again, but there are also natural ways to boost the lawn such as or even
Once you treated the moss and figured out what is damaging your lawn then it should be much healthier and grow specularly just in time for summer.
