With the current shift to online shopping, rising operating costs, and a squeeze on consumer spending, high streets across the UK are under pressure and many beloved local shops are closing their doors. However, not every story is one of decline. Some stunning towns are bucking the trend, with vibrant high streets full of independent shops that continue to thrive, innovate, and bring communities together. Research by American Express Shop Small and retail analysts GlobalData has revealed the top 10 UK hotspots where small businesses are flourishing and helping to keep local economies strong.
Matt Piner, Research Director at GlobalData, said about the findings: "Independent shops bring something different to high streets, offering uniqueness and propositions that are finely tuned to the needs of their local communities. As younger generations of shoppers are attracted to their local high streets, so too are shop owners, with a new breed of Gen Z and Millennial entrepreneurs helping to keep them thriving."

Both streets sit within the Devonshire Quarter designed as an "urban village" that blends city living with a strong independent retail scene. While a few bigger names have a presence on Division Street, the area is known for its independent shops and historic buildings like Beehive Works, a 19th-century cutlery factory still in use today. By day, the streets buzz with shoppers and creatives; by night, they come alive with pubs, live music, and nightlife spots like The Crystal Bar.
