Customers relying on 3G are being urgently advised to brace for impact as a popular network provider has announced the impending shutdown of its service.

02 has confirmed that it will join other leading networks in phasing out the 3G service, effectively leaving numerous Brits without data access on their mobile devices. Amidst the last to implement this change, O2 is fulfilling its part of an agreement with the Government established back in 2021.

According to announcements by the UK's primary network providers, this move promises enhanced 4G and 5G services for users.

O2-affiliated customers from Tesco Mobile, GiffGaff, and Sky Mobile will face disruption if they depend on 3G. Those with devices exclusive to 3G will no longer be able to use data services, stripping them of internet, WhatsApp, and any online-requiring apps unless connected to Wi-Fi - though emergency call capabilities remain intact.

Virgin Media O2 has initially ceased 3G operations in Durham and now declares Norwich, Telford, and Guildford will see 3G withdrawal come July 16, with Torquay to follow suit on August 4, reports .

The ongoing nationwide 3G switch-off is detailed on O2's website, indicating a steady progression throughout the year.

The site explains: "Like other networks in the UK and abroad, we're switching off our 3G network so that we can focus on our faster, more reliable and more energy-efficient 4G and 5G networks.

"Our full 3G switch off will start from April 2025, in Durham, and will continue across the UK throughout the rest of the year."

Ensure your device is compatible with WiFi and 4G Calling.

If you already possess a compatible device, it's crucial to enable WiFi and 4G Calling to ensure the best experience when we switch off 3G. All the information you require can be found on O2's WiFi and 4G Calling page.

Should you not have a device that supports WiFi and 4G Calling, you'll need to consider changing or upgrading your device. For your upgrade options, sign in to My O2.
