Assam bypolls: BJP names candidates in three seats

Send Push

Guwahati: BJP on Saturday announced the names of its candidates for the assembly bypolls to be conducted in Assam in November.

The necessity for bypolls arose in five Assam constituencies of Samaguri, Behali, Dholai, Sidli, and Bongaigaon after the incumbents were elected to the Lok Sabha during the recent general poll. While BJP declared Nihar Ranjan Das as its nominee for the Dholai seat, Diganta Ghatowar has been nominated by the saffron party from the Behali seat. From Samaguri, Diplu Ranjan Sarma has been given a BJP ticket.

In the 2021 assembly elections, BJP emerged victorious in Dholai and Behali, whereas Congress triumphed in Samaguri.

While Diplu Ranjan Sarma is the general secretary of the state BJP, Ghatowar is the former president of Bharatiya Janata Chah Janagosthi Morcha, which represents the tea tribes and Adivasi community in the state BJP. Das is a prominent leader of the party from the Barak Valley region.

In the two other seats, Bongaigaon and Sidli, BJP’s allies AGP and UPPL will field candidates.

The ticket for Bongaigaon is likely to be allocated to former MLA Phani Bhusan Choudhury’s wife, Dipti Mayee Choudhury. She has been associated with AGP for an extended period. However, her probable candidature from Bongaigaon, from where Phani Bhusan has emerged victorious eight times, has offended many party leaders.

Several leaders of anchalik committees in Bongaigaon and president and secretaries of the Bongaigaon district committee of AGP have resigned from primary membership of the party in protest against her candidature, opposing “family politics”.
