Disney shelves Tangled live-action remake following Snow White's box office debacle

Send Push
Disney has reportedly put a hold on its live-action version of Tangled, the popular 2010 animated movie based on the Brothers Grimm story. The film was in the works with The Greatest Showman director Michael Gracey and a script by Jennifer Kaytin Robinson. But according to The Hollywood Reporter, Disney has decided to slow things down, likely because their latest live-action remake, Snow White, didn’t do well at the box office.

Snow White’s disappointing performance

Snow White faced both poor reviews and weak ticket sales. Despite a huge $270 million budget—partly due to the 2023 labour strikes—it only earned $69 million in the U.S. and $145 million worldwide. From the start, the film faced backlash over casting and creative choices. Lead actress Rachel Zegler’s social media posts during promotions also stirred controversy. In the end, the film didn’t connect with audiences, receiving a mediocre B+ CinemaScore and just 50% on Metacritic.

A hit-or-miss remake strategy

The future of Tangled now seems unclear, shedding light on Disney’s shaky track record with live-action remakes. Since the early 2010s, the studio has relied on reimagining its animated hits. While films like Beauty and the Beast, Aladdin, and The Lion King did well, others like Dumbo and Pete’s Dragon fell short.

Recent releases paint a mixed picture

Recently, Mufasa: The Lion King had a slow start with $35.4 million in the U.S. but later earned a strong $718 million worldwide. On the other hand, The Little Mermaid saw a quieter response, collecting $570 million globally. These mixed results show that relying on nostalgia doesn't always guarantee success.

It’s still unclear if Tangled will be revived later or take a new creative direction. For now, Disney seems to be rethinking its strategy, as viewers are showing signs of losing interest in live-action remakes.
