MUMBAI: India’s brigade of prodigious young chess talents has taken the global chess stage by storm. Leading the charge is D Gukesh, who made history by becoming the youngest-ever world chess champion at just 18, after defeating Ding Liren in the FIDE World Championship match in Singapore. Now, the chess world is abuzz with anticipation for one of the most highly awaited contests of the year — Gukesh vs Magnus Carlsen, the world No. 1, at Norway Chess 2025.

The high-stakes event is set to take place in Stavanger from May 26 to June 6.

Speaking at an event hosted by Norway Chess and the Sports Journalists’ Association of Mumbai (SJAM) at the Garware Club House on Thursday, five-time world champion Viswanathan Anand said, “Magnus is highly motivated by the challenge of playing against India’s youngsters. I expect a very exciting battle. Gukesh will not lack motivation or the determination to go after Magnus Carlsen."

The men’s and women’s tournaments will share the same venue, follow a six-player double round-robin format and offer equal prize money.

Kjell Madland, Managing Director and the visionary behind Norway Chess, is currently visiting India to explore partnerships. He said, “Norway Chess is honoured to host the Gukesh vs Magnus clash. We also hope to bring Norway Chess to India soon. The quality of Indian chess over the past decade has been exceptional — the sport would certainly be poorer without India’s contribution.”
