NEW DELHI: Congress on Saturday took a swipe at the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) claiming that the party "is busy weakening the Supreme Court." These remarks came in response to BJP MP Nishikant Dubey's statement asserting that " Parliament should be shut down if the Supreme Court is going to make the laws."

Addressing a media briefing, Congress general secretary Jairam Ramesh said, "They (BJP) are busy weakening the Supreme Court. The powers given by the Constitution to the Supreme Court are being sought to be weakened."

"Those holding Constitutional posts, ministers and even BJP MPs are all speaking against the Supreme Court, which is only saying that while making laws, don't go against the basic structure of the Constitution," he added.

Ramesh stated that the party supports an independent and impartial apex court, "but it is clear that different voices are emerging deliberately to target the Supreme Court," he noted.

Earlier in the day, Nishikant Dubey told news agency ANI, "Supreme Court is responsible for inciting religious wars in the country."

"The Supreme Court is going beyond its limits. If one has to go to the Supreme Court for everything, then Parliament and State Assembly should be shut," the Godda MP added.

The Congress leader also disputed the BJP's allegations against Sonia Gandhi and Rahul Gandhi regarding the National Herald case , saying, “This is not a chargesheet but 'lie-sheet', it is not a legal issue but a political issue.”

“We refute the false propaganda being carried out by the BJP against Sonia Gandhi and Rahul Gandhi in the National Herald case,” he said.

He further alleged that the government is misusing the Enforcement Directorate (ED), claiming that, “Institutions like ED are being misused and the masterminds behind this are two people who have a criminal mindset,” he added.

“This government is constantly attacking the Congress leadership by misusing the ED,” the Congress leader said.

The Congress party also announced plans for "Samvidhan Bachao" rallies across all states from April 25-30 "to drive home message of social, political, economic justice."
