NEW DELHI: Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Sunday claimed that Tamil Nadu had received three times more central funds in the past decade under his government than during the tenure of the previous governments led by the INDI alliance .
“In the last decade, the central government has allocated three times more funding to Tamil Nadu compared to the period before 2014. The Modi government has provided three times the funds to Tamil Nadu while the INDI alliance was in power. This support has contributed to the growth of the economy and industry in the state,” he said while addressing a public gathering in Rameswaram after inaugurating the New Pamban Bridge .
PM Modi took a swipe at critics of the Centre’s role in the state’s development: “Despite this significant growth, some people continue to complain without justification. Before 2014, only Rs 900 crore were allocated each year. You know who was the 'karta-dharta' of the INDI alliance at that time. This year, Tamil Nadu’s rail budget alone has exceeded Rs 6,000 crore,” he said.
Pamban Bridge and Rs 8,300 crore push for Tamil Nadu
The Prime Minister inaugurated India’s first vertical lift sea bridge — the New Pamban Bridge — and flagged off a train and a ship from the structure. He was joined by Tamil Nadu Governor RN Ravi and Union Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw.
He also laid the foundation stone and dedicated rail and road projects worth over Rs 8,300 crore. “On this special day, I got the opportunity to hand over development works worth Rs 8,300 crores. These rail and road projects will boost connectivity in Tamil Nadu,” Modi said.
Highlighting decade-long development
Listing development milestones, Modi said the Chennai Metro, 77 modernised railway stations, and 4,000 km of newly built roads under the Pradhan Mantri Gram Sadak Yojana had transformed connectivity in Tamil Nadu.
Under PM Awas Yojana, over 12 lakh pucca houses had been built in the state, he added. He said small farmers in Tamil Nadu had received Rs 12,000 crore under the PM-Kisan scheme , and crop insurance claims of Rs 14,800 crore had been disbursed through the PM Fasal Bima Yojana.
On the fisheries sector, the Prime Minister said Tamil Nadu had received significant investment through the PM Matsya Sampada Scheme. “The fishing community of Tamil Nadu is extremely hardworking… and the world can clearly see the strength of the state in the Blue Economy ,” he said.
National infrastructure growth
Modi placed Tamil Nadu’s progress in the context of India’s larger infrastructure push: “In the past 10 years, we have increased the budget for infrastructure like rail, road, airports, ports, electricity, and gas pipelines by nearly six times.”
He cited the Chenab Bridge in J&K, the Atal Setu in Mumbai, and the Bogibeel Bridge in Assam, saying, “In the south, the Pamban Bridge stands as one of the few vertical lift bridges in the world.”
“I believe the country's overall development will improve as Tamil Nadu's potential is realized,” he said, reaffirming the state's central role in the journey toward Viksit Bharat.
