NEW DELHI: Heavy rainfall lashed Mumbai on Saturday, leaving parts of the city waterlogged and causing a fatal landslide in Vikhroli. According to officials, two people were killed and two others injured when soil and stones from a hillock collapsed on a hut in Jankalyan Society, Varsha Nagar, during the early hours of the morning.

The downpour, which began around 1 am, continued into the morning, with some parts of Mumbai recording over 200 mm of rain within hours. Vikhroli recorded the highest at 248.5 mm, followed by Santacruz at 232.5 mm, Sion with 221 mm, and Juhu at 208 mm. In contrast, Colaba in south Mumbai received just 70 mm.
Local train services, the city’s lifeline, were severely disrupted due to waterlogging on tracks at Dadar, Kurla, Sion, Chunabhatti and Tilak Nagar, affecting both Central and Harbour lines. The Western Railway also reported delays. BEST buses were diverted from flooded stretches in Sion, Kings Circle, Aarey Colony and Malad Subway.
The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) confirmed that the incident occurred at 2.39am, when a landslide buried a hut belonging to the Mishra family. Four members were rushed to civic-run Rajawadi Hospital, where doctors declared 19-year-old Shalu Mishra and 50-year-old Suresh Mishra dead on arrival. The two survivors, Aarti Mishra, 45, and Ruturaj Mishra, 20, are being treated for injuries and are reported to be in stable condition.
Emergency teams, including the fire brigade and local police, were immediately deployed to the site. Authorities said nearby residents were shifted to safer areas as a precaution.
IMD issues red alert
The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a red alert for Mumbai, Raigad, Ratnagiri, Thane, Palghar and neighbouring districts. Officials warned of “intense to very intense convection” over the city and predicted moderate to heavy downpours in the coming hours.
“Mumbai Radar shows intense to very intense convection over the city and adjoining area. It is likely to continue for the next 2–3 hours,” the IMD said in a post on X.
Continuous rainfall on Saturday triggered waterlogging at several locations, including Gandhi Nagar, Kings Circle and Sion railway station, disrupting road traffic and slowing train services. Municipal Commissioner Bhushan Gagrani directed all civic officials across wards to remain on duty and ensure emergency measures were in place to tackle the impact of the downpour.
