NEW DELHI: Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Sri Lankan President Anura Kumara Dissanayake on Sunday jointly launched key railway projects in Sri Lanka 's Anuradhapura, carried out with support from India.
At the Anuradhapura Railway Station, the leaders inaugurated two projects — the upgraded railway track of the Maho-Omanthai line and a new signalling system for the Maho-Anuradhapura section.
"Boosting connectivity and enhancing friendship! In Anuradhapura, President Anura Kumara Dissanayake and I jointly inaugurated the track upgradation of the existing Maho-Omanthai railway line. The signalling project which involves the installation of an advanced signalling and telecommunication system along the Maho-Anuradhapura section was also launched. India is proud to support Sri Lanka in various aspects of their development journey," PM Modi said in a post on X.
Both projects were completed with Indian assistance and aim to improve railway connectivity and safety in the northern part of Sri Lanka.
The Maho-Omanthai railway line, supported by India with 91.27 million US dollars, connects the northern region of Sri Lanka to Colombo. It is expected to help with transport and economic activities.
In addition, the foundation stone was laid for an advanced signalling system on the Maho-Anuradhapura line. This system is being built with a 14.9 million US dollar grant from India and is meant to make train operations safer and more efficient.
Earlier in the day, Prime Minister Modi and President Dissanayake visited the Jaya Shri Mahabodhi Temple in Anuradhapura. The temple is known for a Bodhi tree believed to have grown from a sapling brought from India by Theri Sanghamitta, daughter of Emperor Ashoka. The tree holds religious and historical importance for both India and Sri Lanka. It is believed that the sacred Bodhi tree at the temple has its origin in India's Bodhgaya.
Moreover, on Saturday, the two leaders held discussions on various topics to strengthen relations between the countries.
Sri Lanka President Dissanayake also conferred upon Prime Minister Modi the Sri Lanka Mitra Vibhushana award, which is the highest honour Sri Lanka gives to foreign leaders.
