Zohran Mamdani ’s election as the next Mayor of New York City triggered an online meltdown among MAGA supporters, who flooded social media with accusations that the city had “fallen” to a left-wing takeover.
The 34-year-old Democrat, a democratic socialist and state lawmaker from Queens, will become New York’s first Muslim mayor when he takes office in January. His victory over former governor Andrew Cuomo and Republican Curtis Sliwa prompted furious reactions claiming that New York was “toast,” “ruined,” and “done.”
The backlash quickly turned ugly. Alongside anti-Muslim sentiment, a wave of anti-India rhetoric was directed at Mamdani, who was born in Uganda to Indian parents. Several users demanded that he be “deported back to India,” while others labelled him a “communist” and a “jihadist.” One account snarled, “You and Mamdani are the poster boys for how broken our immigration system is! Go back to India!” Another user wrote, “We need to deport Ackman to Israel and Mamdani to India or wherever he’s from.”
The hostility spilled into broader anti-immigrant messaging as right-wing influencers proclaimed that “foreigners” had replaced Americans in New York City.
Conservative commentator William Wolfe claimed “Americans didn’t elect Mamdani, foreigners did,” calling the city “a third world metropolis wearing the Big Apple as a skin suit.” Another account, End Wokeness, declared: “Import third world masses. Elect third world politicians. Receive third world policies.” One user announced they would “never” visit New York, while another warned that Mamdani had “far greater and broader conquests on his mind. New York is just a start.”

Despite that, turnout surged past two million voters, the highest in a mayoral race in more than five decades. Mamdani campaigned on aggressive cost-of-living proposals, including free buses, free childcare and city-run grocery shops, promising to make New York “better for ordinary people.” In his victory speech, he said, “In this moment of political darkness, New York will be the light.”
