Pope Francis died at the age of 88, the Vatican announced on Monday morning. Cardinal Kevin Farrell said the pontiff “returned to the home of the Father” at 7:35am, after a life devoted to the Church and its most vulnerable members.
With his passing, the College of Cardinals will now begin the centuries-old process of choosing a new pope. The 115 eligible cardinals, all under the age of 80, will soon gather in Rome for a secret conclave. After taking an oath of secrecy, they will vote up to four times daily in the Sistine Chapel until one candidate secures a two-thirds majority. White smoke from the chapel’s chimney will signal that a new pope has been chosen.
